Have you ever been in the situation where you friends eat their eggs without egg yolk saying that its unhealthy and such.. well this is a confusing one. Egg yolks are known primarily for their high cholesterol content. But the medical research community has learned that dietary cholesterol is a different measure than blood level of cholesterol, which is associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke. I am on who would eat all the egg yolk and my eggsumption is pretty high, one sitting on a regular day could go up to as much as 5 eggs?
One recent study echoes the growing research, showing that egg consumption had no effect on the overall blood cholesterol levels of 115 healthy adults. What’s more, another recent study found some evidence that eating whole eggs increases HDL — the heart-protective, “good” cholesterol. BOOYAH !! bet you didnt know that.
“There are much bigger problems in the American diet than cholesterol,” says Drew Ramsey, M.D. an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, who studies the connection between lifestyle behaviors like diet and psychological health. “There’s not data to suggest that it should be at the top of people’s worries about food choices. Everyone’s in agreement about that: The real problem with diabetes and obesity is eating too much processed food.”
And there are several nutrients specific to the egg yolk that help promote overall health. Egg yolks are one of the richest dietary sources of the B-complex vitamin choline, which is associated with better neurological function and reduce inflammation. There’s also evidence that dietary choline helps with fetal brain development when pregnant women eat it. Another side benefit of a diet rich in choline is, well, happiness.
Choline breaks down into bethane, which is used during the methylation cycle, which in turn helps produce ‘happiness’ hormones like serotonin, dopamine, norephinephrine, explains Ramsey.
Egg yolks also contain two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect against vision loss. and they have a big dose of sulfur:
” Eggs are also high in sulfur, an essential nutrient that helps with everything from vitamin B absorption to liver function. But sulfur is also necessary for the production of collagen and keratin, which help create and maintain shiny hair, strong nails and glowing skin ”
The yolk’s health benefits should not overshadow egg whites, however, which are a low-calorie, low-fat source of perfect protein. In fact, eggs are considered the “Gold Standard” for protein quality because their amino acids are the most digestible to humans.
But even though egg yolks are certainly a health food, they haven’t been cleared for unlimited consumption: Doctors recommends consuming no more than four eggs per week, which is the amount they found to be healthy in adults. What say you ?
Ever had melt in your mouth beef soup noodle in Bangkok before ? If you have not, I sure can tell you where , I found this place when I was staying in Bangkok and they do know how to serve a bowl of delicious beef noodle.
This place looks deceiving enough , from the outside it looks like a cafe serving coffee as it is always packed with people at lunch time. Look how cool this place is from the outside.
Even the menu was in thai language, but then when you enter do ask for the English menu cause we were given the thai one and we were staring blankly into it.
What I like about this place is that they have a Mix and Match noodle which you can see on the right side of the menu, Imagine having able to personalize your beef noodle into any way you like. Heaven
Check out the cool interior, and it’s local menu which I will never understand.
if you look at the store from the outside, You will only see 4 tables but up stairs is another story. Ample space but always full at lunch
My stewed beef noodle.
Personalized beef noodle.
Looking at this picture makes me drool cause I remember ever bite of that beef piece I hold in that picture.. Drool Worthy for sure. The broth that comes together with the soup packs a flavorful punch and with the extra condiments that we added into the noodle makes it even more delicious than ever.
So how do you get to this place? Your best bet is to take the Lumphini MRT and walk towards Sofitel hotel and keep on walking till you see North East Restaurant on your left. Its about 5 mins walk away from Lumphini Station. Make sure you see the park on your right and stores on your left when you walk towards down the road. You should see it.
Hidden Gems in Bang Rak or Thanon Charoen Krung
People do get bored with food in Bangkok city and after the many occasional Tom Yum this and Tom Yum That, I am not one that will eat in the same place twice in this vibrant city of Thailand, actually if you are one that loves to eat in the restaurant or in a upper class area this post is not for you.
This time I am taking you guys on a journey to Bang Rak vicinity where you are able to savour centuries old stalls that is still around after many generations.
The flavor for the day will be duck (Pet Yang in Thai) as usually you will order food in the city which are MOO, KHAI,…. so yup, Duck it is. I told the receptionist girl that I am having duck for today, she said she NO LIKEY ! sad
I manage to find this lovely restaurant called Prachak in Bang Rak
The picture below shows the humble store’s on the inside, not much of space but it sure feels homely and if you are expecting to have a nice quiet lunch or dinner, I suggest you bring your ear plug
The menu below which states the history of the restaurant and its food offering was pretty neat with pictures and pricing, I have to say they dedicated about two pages of its history (I am guessing all this as its all written in Thai) it sure seems that way. When you enter this little restaurant you will find that it has this cramp space from a wall no wider than 10ft, its pretty cramp with only about 8 tables and everyone shares table.
Come on, they can’t go wrong with duck since the have been dishing this out since 1909. I am sure the picture on the left is the owner and founder of Prachak. While the lady must be his loving mummy.
Anyway, I was hungry for some duck and not looking to learn a history of this restaurant. Listening to my tummy is better than learning someone’s history and history has never been by favourite subject.
“ A Hungry Man is a Angry Man”
So feed me with your best duck!
First up on the menu that we ordered that came was this dry shrimp noodle, when it came to the table it had this aura of Mak’s noodle from Hong Kong, I was getting excited wondering that I need not travel to Hong Kong for Mak’s noodle anymore, once biten into the noodle, the texture was not the same but it did give the same appearance of Mak’s setting my hopes too high on this one. \
Noodle was alright but I have to say it wont be able to compare to Mak’s , shrimps was plump and juicy.
Next up was the roasted pork with dumplings.. another awesome roast pork noodle, roasted pork skin was crispy as well as tasty. Roast pork was generously sliced, can you say “Crunch” “Munch” All Gone??
Why would you go into a duck stall and not order duck, Of course we did.. we ordered the whole nice yards. I have to say the Duck is aromatic and the infusion of the plum sauce goes so well, its like putting honey into tea, the Chinese preserve sausage was a surprise to me, thinking that it is gonna be a common flavor that we always from chinese preserve sausage geezz, how wrong was I.. it tasted sweet and its so juicy and delicious. See the aftermath.
Yes , Shameless me, I licked it cleaned.. it I could I would really literally licked it with my tongue.. but since there are many people around .. I used my fingers. (Finger licking good)
Prachak Pet Yang – Roasted Duck
1415, Thanon Charoen Krung,
Bang Rak, Bangkok
Next stop is a dessert stall named Boon Sap and in-fact its just opposite the road across Prachak
Boonsap Thai Desserts is a household name in Bangkok with their signature Thai desserts recipes, with a couple of wide variety to choose from, Boon Sap have been around since World War 2 and now this place is run by the 3rd generation, and transformed to a cafe with air-conditioning and two tables; as well as serving coffee and other beverages so you can hangout and savour their delicious creations.
I for one only zoomed into the Mango Sticky rice as I have been trying to find the best stall that sells MSR,
With a skin made out of bullet proof glass, some say titanium, I took second helpings for the coconut sauce that compliments the mango sticky rice.. but really this time I am in heaven, I have never seen the viscosity of the coconut cream in such form. its so rich and creamy. OMG taste like heaven, I need her recipe and I need it bad. This could be one of the best MSR I have ever eaten in Bangkok. No really .. for real !
Boonsap Thai Desserts
1478, Thanon Charoen Krung,
Bang Rak, Bangkok.
Opens from 7am until 5pm.
So If you want to know how to get to this two awesome places, take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and walk towards Robinson, this shop is situated about 100m away from Robinson. Enjoy your food hunting
Bangkok Thailand is known for its street food, every corner in every street you will definitely see vendors in their push cart selling food from salad (Som Tam), Hotdog, Fried food, drinks etc..etc..
I am bringing you on my journey on the road of Silom, First stop is to get off Sala Daeng Station and exit to the left, as on the left side of the streets there are a plenty of restaurants that sells local food, I am only covering less one from here cause I only have one stomach to fill. The right side are more of massage parlor and store selling clothes and fast food like Burger King and Starbucks
If you follow the red line drawn on the map, you will see the path that I have walked.
First stop was this famous shop that caters to both the noodle and rice lovers, they have been here for a long time and you will see customers streaming in and out of the restaurant from lunch time till they close, while the take away counter is also busy. The boss spots crew cut and looks like he works out.
Just by looking at all the roasted meat on display sure will make anyone hungry.
If you look at this display this one has a crab sign on it, I believe they sell crab meat with their noodle, which you can clearly see on the left side of this picture, each meat is carefully selected and peeled by hand.
The walls of the shop is filled with newspaper clipping of their shop and other accomplishment
The usual suspects on a Thai eatery.. Sugar, Chili flakes, fresh cut chili, dark soya sauce.. imagine putting all this into your piping hot noodle.. just by adding one would already alter the dish taste but maybe that’s what makes Thai cuisine so unique cause you are your own chef.
This is the wanton noodle soup with crab meat and sweet sauce pork, I was looking into this dish and it kind reminisce the time when I had it when I was a little kid but minus the crab meat and with Wonton. The soup taste fresh with a hint of crab sweetness, it does not coat your tongue with oil or a heavy salt base like some noodle store does.
As for the noodles, I find it a bit soft (overcooked) I like it Al Dante style where there is a crunch to every bite.
This is the roasted pork rice dish with their famous sauce poured all over it, maybe it’s a norm for them to smother the rice with the sauce and I liked it, cause it has this tangy sweetness that compliments the rice, the roast pork would have been better if it was eaten hot and freshly prepared but with the volume of the store, I don’t think that is possible to prepare when ordered.
The roasted pork has a crunch to its skin and it was cut just right in thickness. If you like roasted port this will surely please.
I figured out I would also try the dry noodle as well since I am here, the dry version could do a bit with more flavor or even from its sauce, think of this as having the soup base with out the soup to compliment it, just the noodle drain out in hot water and top with the meat and veg, I would most definitely go for the soup base.
Knowing Thai for their portion size, they serve noodles and rice in very small portion maybe like a fist size, (girls fist size) so walking down the street you will see all the street vendors on your left and right lined up on the tiny walkway.
Aunty in red was not too happy with me touching her packed desserts. (First Thai vendor I met that has a unhappy face) but she was selling this glutinous rice ball in ginger soup which was my favourite, so in-fact I was just confirming which was it.
More yummy street food that will get your waist expending within days.
Fried Instant noodle with your own selected protein and vegetable (mind you this packs a punch) Think Jalapeno soup
Mr James Bond here is selling soup noodle where you can sit on the road side and pick your own veg to be added into it.
I did not want to include this place because I am sure many people have already reviewed it in their blogs and many have known about it, but since Its one of my have to visit I should just add it in as well.
That is Hai Som Tam, this places is famous for its Somtam (DuH), known for serving food from the northeast Isan region of Thailand meaning that the sticky rice is plentiful and (those blasted) chillies feature heavily. This laminate table eatery is buzzing at lunchtime with office workers grabbing a quick feed, the staff are friendly, the vibe is inviting and some people even linger under the fluorescent lights. It is normal to squeeze in a table with another as this place is usually packed.
What more to finish those spicy lip burning tongue ripping Somtam with a cool and refreshing coke served only in a metal cup filled with crush ice, sitting by the road side looking at the world go by.
I found this stall selling fried stuff at the corner of the Silom road just by the bend near Saladaeng BTS, this tasty snacks make one hell of a compliment to a night supper in the room. The batter that she fries with sure is lip smacking, it makes a great compliment to any beer that you are having Reasonably priced
In my last trip to Bangkok, I met this lady who was a tour guide and she kindly recommended me a restaurant when she heard I was heading to one of the famous Royal Thai cuisine in the City. She told me that I must try this restaurant and five months later here I am back in the land of smiles again.
She swore by this restaurant and said that she brings all her customer there, Ban Khun Mae was its name
Situated in Siam Square and easily found. Its just opposite Novotel Siam on Siam Square hotel.
The walkway to the second floor as the ground floor was packed with customers, luckily we were able to get a table without waiting for one.
Part of the dessert prep table on the ground floor.
Second floor seating arrangement, almost 80% of the tables were filled and people are streaming in and out as it was dinner time at about 8pm
Fried mushroom for appetizers, slightly salty with garlic bits. I was expecting some kind of intense flavor bursting while biting into the fried mushroom but …. it never came
Mixed stir fried vegetables , nothing special about it, not sure why I keep finding Thai food salty to my taste.
Green Curry was creamy with just the right spices, not overwhelming
I believe there is a live kim (Chinese cimbalom) performance by a woman in classic Thai dress everyday. Most people aren’t paying attention to her anyway as most are busy eating or conversing but her music does liven up the ambience rather than the noisy fork and spoon clanking on the plates and chit chattering sound of the customers.
Couldn’t resist the Mango sticky rice when ever we dine in any restaurant, the mango was not as sweet as I expectant and the glutinous rice was not as fragrant as I thought it would be as how the tour lady recommended, if you like please ask them not to pour the coconut cream on top of the rice.
This has got to be one of my fav Thai dessert called Tub Thim Krob and it was the savior for the day, The waterchestnut aka red ruby was bite size with the right crunchiness, the coconut milk was not overly oily or overpowering. So if there is a next time I would only order this as my dessert.
My thought on this restaurant would be………you are better off eating somewhere else as its full of tourist and it feels that you are in just a thai themed restaurant, food was just so-so and the hype is just over rated, but if you want to dine in Ban Khun Mae do check out their website
Ban Khun Mae Restaurant,

Seldom I dwell into a food review cause I am not super foodie or one that will go out hunting for food after someone mentions about the place or its food, but for this time I will twist my own arm and make this and exceptional case, cause
1. I have not been updating my blog ever since I was hospitalized
2. I am on a mission in the land of smiles “Bangkok” I will have a few staple place to go to and one of them is this place.
This will be my first travelogue and I hope I wont disappoint you guys
Coming in on a Monday weekday sure has it perks, the crowd was minimal and the Airport does not has its usual visitors, so clearing immigration was a breeze. First stop was to get the DTAC simcard and mind you please do not get from another company cause DTAC is giving the best promotion with only Baht $299, its call the travelers Sim, if you decide to buy this later at MBK or some other dodgy phone shop its gonna cost you like baht $400 or which ever price the shop would wanna charge you.
Reaching the hotel around 10am it would be too early to check in, so went to lunch first at one of my favorite place where they serve the best FRIED CHICKEN, oh please don’t even compare KFC to this, the wont even come close. This awesome place serving this piping hot fried chicken is called Polo Fried Chicken at Soi Polo
The restaurant has this no nonsense setting, no high tech equipment, no fancy tables or chairs, This place just wanna serve you some awesome chicken, we ordered the fried Chicken and Lad Moo which is mince pork.
Just posting this picture reminds me of the smell and tenderness this chicken has, it was well marinated, the skin when you sink your teeth into it breaks and crunch with a crackle sound, those small little pieces on top are not garnish but more of some fried bits of garlic and er…. other bits, if you could do ask for more of those bits, DO IT, cause you will never have enough of these little crunchy suckers, sprinkle them to your glutinous rice and you might as well eat it alone. Yes it is that good for me.
You see this two sauce, the one on the left is spicy and the other on the right looks badass with bright glowing red and cut chili but infact that is the sweeter of the lot. What I do with this is that you tear the chicken and you dip it into them sauce, oh I can’t tell you enough how well the spice of those sauce blends with the hot and juicy chicken. I love the spicier one as I love it spicy.
If you have eaten Lad Moo before in Bangkok or some where else, I am not sure if you notice the distinct taste and smell of the pork, Polo cooks this pretty well and the use of herbs and spices is just right. I can’t stop eating this by itself, with every bite it does not over power you with salt like some other restaurant do. Don’t worry about the spiciness as it is not that spicy but only its looks.
A half chicken will set you back at Baht 100 and a full chicken is only at Baht 200 and Lad Moo is priced at Baht 60. What more can you ask, they priced it right and nothing pretentious about this restaurant, but do go before lunch as the lunch crowd in this place is pretty crazy. See the girl as one of the satisfied customer
Here is the address to this awesome place:
It’s no secret that if you’re overweight, you’re going to suffer from a number of negative health risks. Everything from high blood pressure to the development of diabetes to a higher incidence of stroke can be linked to being obese or overweight, and the numbers are rising in terms of obesity in nearly all states.
But, one connection that sometimes goes overlooked is that of body fat levels to your cholesterol levels.
Let’s take a closer look at what this is all about. If possible try to go for a check up on your triglyceride level. I know I have not done a full body check up since like forever. I know I will be needing to book one soon and hope you do to.
The Diet That You’re Eating
The very first thing that you need to consider regarding your body fat level and how it relates to your cholesterol is how you gained that body fat in the first place – the diet that you eat daily. Those who are quite obese and who are carrying an excess of body fat often got this way because they are eating far too much fast and convenience food (or I would like to call it processed food).
They didn’t get that way because their diet was too full of fresh fruits and vegetables along with whole grains and lean proteins as these foods are naturally lower in calories and you just wouldn’t eat enough of them to accumulate that degree of excess body fat. Because of the types of foods they’re eating, this means they will have higher intakes of saturated fat and cholesterol, therefore this will cause their overall cholesterol level to go up.
While in a few very rare cases if someone was feasting on healthy fats (such as consuming high quantities of nuts, nut butters, and healthy oils) each day in addition to their usual diet that could cause them to become overweight without suffering high cholesterol, those cases are far in between.
The Lack Of Exercise
The second major reason why being overweight or obese can cause you to have high cholesterol levels is because the second thing that most of these individuals are doing is not exercising.
Being overweight is attributed to too many calories coming in while too few calories are going out. This is accomplished through that higher calorie diet along with the lack of physical activity to burn those excess calories off. Those who are exercising regularly and who are still at a slightly higher body weight may not see nearly the same degree of blood cholesterol levels as those who aren’t.
Exercise does help to combat high cholesterol levels so this on its own will definitely provide some benefits.
Even still, if you’re exercising but eating a diet high in saturated fat you’re still going to be running into problems as far as your overall cholesterol profile goes.
So there you have the information you need about the connection between having high body fat levels and having a high cholesterol level. It’s vital that you do take your body fat level seriously so that you can gain control over it and avoid all the negative health consequences that come with high cholesterol.

There is a new player in town and I don’t mean tennis player, this time it’s my 2 cents worth about Club Lava which held its Grand opening on the 3rd August 2012. I know this place is going to be hip and happening when group GM Bob Khan declared
‘The quality of the sound system was the number one criteria in our long list of objectives,’ . ‘It is vital to create the right atmosphere – if you have poor sound, patrons won’t stick around after their first drink.’
How right he was, and if your music ain’t flowing, people ain’t dancing.
I was lucky enough to be invited for their grand opening and I have to say this club can easily pack 300 – 350 revelers for a party. Check out some of the opening pictures of the club, Also check out (more…)

Top 5 Benefits of Drinking Coconut Water for Athletes
Coconut water is often referred to as “nature’s sports drink.” But how did this simple beverage, enjoyed for thousands of years throughout the world, earn such an impressive title?

I was browsing for sites and places to see in Tokyo when I stumbled upon what Japan considered as a National Treasure, but this treasure is a live one, and his name is Jiro Ono, this chap has been dishing out sushi all his life and now there is a documentary on him alone, I am glad that I have come to know about this person, I hope to get a glimpse of him when I am there, also did you know he was the the only Sushi chef to have gotten a 3 Michelin Star for his humble little restaurant, and by “Little” I mean it can only seat 10 at one go! That’s how small it is and yes Reservations I heard must be at least 1 year in advance.. wait for it …
you no speak Japanese sorry they don’t take your reservations, so doing more research I found out that they currently do take Gaijins reservation.

Think that first cup of coffee in the morning is what gives you your get up and go? Think again. New UK research has shown coffee has no actual affect on alertness, suggesting instead that it’s all in the mind.
By Amanda Pitcher
The Bristol University study involved 379 people who were not allowed to drink coffee or consume caffeine for a 16-hour period, the UK’s Daily Mail reported. They were then either given coffee or a placebo and then evaluated through a series of tests on their mental alertness.
The researchers found people who were daily consumers of coffee develop a tolerance to caffeine and its side effects, including anxiety and stimulatory effects. They suggested that rather than coffee making regular drinkers feels more alert and awake first thing in the morning, it was instead reversing the effects of overnight caffeine-withdrawal.
Half of the study’s participants did not drink coffee or caffeinated beverages frequently, and the other half were described as medium to high users, the Daily Mail reported.
After fasting and then being delivered coffee or the placebo, participants were asked to rate their mental alertness, anxiety and any headaches.
Those who were medium or high consumers of coffee when given the placebo were found to have decreased in mental alertness and an increase in the chance of having a headache. Those who received caffeine did not report a change either way — suggesting instead that the coffee had only brought them back to “normal”.
“Our study shows that we don’t gain an advantage from consuming caffeine — although we feel alerted by it, this is caffeine just bringing us back to normal,” lead researcher Professor Peter Rogers said.
“On the other hand, while caffeine can increase anxiety, tolerance means that for most caffeine consumers this effect is negligible.”
The research will be published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology.
Latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures reveal Australians drink an average of 2.4kg of coffee a year, which is rising every year. We are still a long way behind Finland, however, who consume an astounding 11.2kg of coffee per year each.
A BIS Schrapnel report Coffee in Australia 2006-2008 found there were around 1.26 billion cups of coffee sold each year in the food service industry, which amounts to around $3 billion.
Last weekend was a awesome weekend at Punggol, its because Punggol Town was a hustle and bustle with life and entertainment, All this buzz was created by none other than the Punggol Parade that was held there annually around this time of the year, In-fact this was the seventh Parade held in the small town of Punggol *no longer small I guess* with the booming of housing development coming up, it’s a no brainer that Punggol has garner such great interest and *Ahem jealousy from people all around the island* at this rate there are going to be plenty of new faces that we will have to say hi to in the near future.

Recently there was a trend on twitter on McLobster, which is not a hoax by the way, they really do have that in store, just that not in your McD’s store. In Singapore they came out with this Teppanyaki Chicken McGRILL !! this burger or I rather call it sandwich has a tender whole chicken thigh grilled in Teppanyaki style for that sear-moist bitey taste, what’s more is that they do put on two slice of thick tomato on the sandwich with fresh lettuce smothered with creamy home-style sauce and sprinkled with fresh pepper, To top it off they use sourdough bun to hold it together. If that does not make u salivate I don’t know what will..
I have tried this Teppanyaki McGRILL and all I can say is Yummmeh !! the size of the this is McGRILL is just right, so for all your McLOBSTER fan out there eat your heart out. Here is a picture of the Teppanyaki Chicken McGrill and is only going for S$5.25 for a-la-carte.

But after going through all of the 7, I think we might as well just eat grass or be vegan, luckily Beer and Wine is not in the list. Alright for mankind CHEERS to BEER and WINE and also ALCOHOL !!

Think twice before you reach for that can of fizzy drink. It is not just about your waistline. Think about the lines on your face too. That is because carbonated drinks can age you, nutritionists say.
Other well-loved foods like pastries, potato chips, sausages, coffee, red meat, white rice and bread can also cause premature ageing. The reason? Most of these foods are high in fat or sugar, which are not healthy for the body, said Ms Magdalin Cheong, chief dietitian and senior manager of Dietetic and Food Services at Changi General Hospital.
Foods that age us include:
Carbonated drinks which are high in sugar and have no nutrients. They have ‘empty calories’, said Ms Teo Kiok Seng, a nutritionist at Nutrition Network Services.
‘The sugar in these drinks can lead to obesity, which increases your risk of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and stroke,’ she said.
A nutritional study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that a can of carbonated drink a day can cause one to pile on 7kg in a year.
They can increase the risk of colorectal cancer, a recent European study found, Ms Teo added.
The culprits are the carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds, which are formed when nitrite preservatives are added to processed meat, she said.
Ms Jaclyn Reutens, a dietitian at Aptima Nutrition & Sports Consultants, added that sausages are usually made with fatty meat.
Chemicals and additives are also added so a person’s liver has to do more work to detoxify them.
‘As we age, our organs do not work as efficiently so some people may get into trouble,’ said Ms Reutens
It has caffeine. What most people may not know is that caffeine makes stress hormones shoot up and stay at an abnormally high level for hours after consumption.
‘One of the biggest contributors to premature ageing is the powerful stress hormone called cortisol,’ said Ms Teo. ‘High levels of cortisol wear down the muscles, leading to muscle wasting.’ Excessive caffeine is also dehydrating, said Ms Reutens.
Potato chips and fries
They are deep fried at high temperatures, giving rise to the formation of trans-fat.
Diets high in trans-fat are linked to an increased risk of coronary heart disease, said Ms Teo. ‘However, if palm oil is used, no trans-fat will be produced,’ she added.
They contain a lot of sugar, which can lead to obesity. What is worse is that pastries are often made with hydrogenated oils, which contain trans-fat.
Hydrogenated oils are made by adding hydrogen to liquid oils to turn them into solids for easier storage. However, this chemical process produces trans-fat. An example would be margarine.
Trans-fat increases the risk of heart disease more than saturated fat does, said Ms Teo, as it lowers good cholesterol and increases bad cholesterol in the bloodstream.
In addition, the combination of sugar and trans-fat is bad news for our liver and pancreas, said
Ms Reutens. ‘It’s dangerous to overwork our organs as it means we are more exposed to free radicals.’
Free radicals are unstable particles caused by chemical reactions in the body. Antioxidants are needed to fight them, she added. ‘If our intake of anti-ageing foods is insufficient to combat free radicals, we age faster and have a higher risk of diseases.’
It has protein, which is essential for tissue repair, but too much animal protein may cause calcium loss from bones. This increases the risk of osteoporosis, said Ms Teo.
Studies have shown that a high protein intake in middle-aged adults is linked to inflammatory polyarthritis, where inflammation occurs in more than one joint.
White rice and white bread
They have very little fibre, making them ‘high glycemic index’ foods.
‘Such foods are digested and absorbed into the bloodstream very quickly, causing a sudden spike in blood sugar level,’ said Ms Teo.
This can lead to cell changes that accelerate ageing and increase the risk of chronic diseases, she added. These include Type 2 diabetes, gall bladder and heart diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and certain types of cancers.
Other high glycemic index foods include mashed potatoes, processed grains and sugary cereals.
He asked where were we headed and we said KL as he did not pose a threat to us, then come the next word he uttered from his dirty mouth, saying hey boy I like you! haha .. just kidding he didnt say that to Jason but he said this in his stupid hokkien instead, "I just got out of prison and I need to have some financial aid, we all were kinda scared as he was like a big guy who reek of trouble, that guy was wearing a white T and had short cropped hair. he did not pull out any weapon or so but his stare was enough to scare me and Jason, at that time We had a bit of CNY money to spend on and I remembered that time we wanted to go to "Fishbone" to get our hockey sticks. Jason replied to that man "hey let me asked my friend which is Henry who was sitting 3 meters away" this time it was trouble and Henry came over without knowing what to do also. This time all three of us are trapped, In my head I was thinking damm, all our CNY ang pow money is going to this dirt bag. I think all of us were hoping that someone would come save us, In the end YES !! comes our saviour, not Brandon of course, but a group of my 7 to 8 senior friends from the librarian society that was going to KL as well. I quickly pointed to them and telling that dirt bag that hey look, My friends are here and I waved to one of them and he waved back, I think that really got that idiots attention, and he walked off as fast as he came ! well we sure had our lucky break and that was one of the most craziest incident related to extortion I ever had. Those were really fun times to be honest. I have more school boy gang story to tell, but lets see if I wanna blurt out all this, cause it involves my friends. but not in a bad way but in a funny way! Life back then were tough as we had to endure the gang fights in school and also OUT of school!
Well, I got to sign off now, got to run the rat race ! hope a big change will come soon !
This is about Sushi, I have been reading about sushi so much these few days it sparked my hunger for Sushi, and here’s how to pick the perfect sushi restaurant.
- Eat only at the best place you can find. Many sushi bars are a bit
expensive, but quality usually sucks, so price is no indicator of
quality. Ask Japanese people where they go to eat sushi and go there.
- Stick to one or two good places once you find them. Regulars get better sushi and better overall service than casual patrons.
- A good Japanese restaurant is most often not a good sushi place. A good sushi place is usually a good Japanese restaurant.
- Count the number of Japanese sitting at the sushi bar. The more
Japanese people eating there, usually the better the sushi. Remember:
Japanese people are manic about quality.
- Most often than not, avoid the restaurants with little boats of
sushi parading along a large sushi bar. It’s a great gimmick, but
remember that those restaurants are to sushi what McDonald’s is to
- The only chain of sushi restaurants in the world worth visiting (in fact, I encourage you to) belongs to Nobuyuki Matsuhisa.
Nobu is arguably the best sushi chef in the world, and has opened a
chain of small but high-quality (and pricey) restaurants in major
cities in the US and in Europe.
Warning signs that you probably won’t get good sushi
- The fish and other seafood are not on display at the sushi bar
- The fish and other seafood on display look dry
- The sushi chef or (worse) a food server wants to take your order for all sushi items at once
- The sushi chef doesn’t give you a chance to order “one or two pieces at a time”, Japanese style
- The restaurant advertises “all you can eat sushi” for a fixed price
- The menu items are not listed in Japanese followed by a translation; they appear only in your native language
- The menu consists mostly of rolled sushi with names like California Roll or Oriental Delight
- More than half of the available ingredients are cooked
- The sushi chef hasn’t the vaguest idea of what you’re talking about
if you ask for kazunoko, shiso, inago, chirashi, or yama gobo
- The morsels of fish atop nigiri pieces are so large that you can
barely see the rice underneath (believe it or not, some people think
that the sushi place is good because you get big pieces of fish). Big
pieces of fish are good as long as the fish quality is good.
- The sushi rice is flavorless; sushi rice must have a delicate aroma and flavor
- The restaurant is part of a chain or franchise
If four or more of the conditions above are met, leave the place immediately and head to a different restaurant.
How to Order Your Food and Drinks
sushi is not about filling yourself with raw fish. Eating sushi is an
experience–some say a ritual–that involves all your senses. Serious sushi
can only be eaten at the bar because that’s the only place where you’ll
see the colors, inhale the aromas, share the laughter, and taste the
food fully immersed in the environment. Plan on a one and a half to two
- Eat at the sushi bar.
- Greet the other people at the bar and start conversation with them; sushi is about community.
- If you cannot eat at the bar, walk to it and check the quality of the fish before ordering.
- Greet the itamae (sushi chef)
even if you don’t eat at the bar. He’ll recommend special stuff if he
recognizes you as a regular and/or someone who truly knows how to eat
- Remember that itamae are not just “cooks”. They have traditions
dating back to the time of the samurai. These same guys fed the meanest
leanest macho hombre warriors of Japan. Be respectful and you shall
enjoy the best sushi.
- Order all sushi items from the itamae, everything else from the food servers.
- Order sashimi (selection of fresh fish slices) first; ask the sushi
chef for his choice of fish. He knows what’s fresh today better than
you. “Please prepare what you think is freshest,” is the best way to
order. Let him be creative.
- Order one kind of sushi at a time, maximum three if the bar is
busy. That could be nigiri, maki or temaki. Big plates are for the
- If you are a regular, let the itamae decide what you’re having and at what pace it is served.
- Don’t rush through your meal. Eat at McDonald’s if you want to eat fast.
- If you’re at the bar and in a bit of a hurry (i.e. have a half hour to eat or so), order a chirashi,
a small lacquered box with a bed of sushi rice, a bit of sugar, some
pickled veggies and a chef’s selection of fish and mollusks. This way
you’ll get all your sushi at once in a single serving and then leave.
Eat it with chopsticks.
- Pickled vegetables, sprouts, and some things like ankimo (monkfish
liver) are OK to order from the sushi chef if you see them advertised
at the bar.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for things not listed in the menu. Chances
are the chef has them under the counter for those people (like you) who
truly know what they’re doing. Kazunoko, inago, hebo and idtakko fall
in this category.
- If the bar is busy and you feel like you can’t wait, order some
edamame (boiled soy beans), suimono(clear broth) or misoshiru
(fermented soy bean soup) to keep you busy until the sushi chef can
take care of you.
- Eat sushi with moderation. More than 10 kinds of fish, crab, and clams is too much because your palate numbs.
- Drink green tea, beer, or sake with your sushi. Soft drinks spoil
the taste and white wine is for snobs. Remember there are more than 300
kinds of sake, so at least one will be better than the cheap Chardonnay
they offer by the glass.
- If you’re drinking sake, keep in mind that not all sake is heated for consumption. Nigori (unfiltered) sake looks like milk; drink it cold. For hot sake, ask for Sho Chiku Bai. Ask the itamae for more exotic drinks like gold sake (with real gold flakes in it!)
- If the sushi is excellent and you’re having a good time, offer to
buy a drink for the itamae and his assistants. You will discover that
most Japanese itamae drink Budweiser (as observed in San Francisco,
Beverly Hills, Chicago, New York, and Moscow). Don’t offer to buy
drinks during lunch; this is an evening tradition.
- Don’t be surprised if your itamae pours you a glass of the special
reserve sake he keeps under the bar if he realizes that you know your
sushi and how to order it. Thank him, raise your glass and toast by
The itamae and rest of the staff are tipped separately unless you pay
the bill with a credit card. The bulk of the tip must go to the itamae.
