Chinese New Year 2012

I know Chinese New Year is over for all, time to work your butt off eating all those cookies, bak kwa, soft drinks, beer and especially tossing the Yu Sheng or Yee Sang.  I only manage to toss twice for this CNY, as CNY is the only time we get to eat the Yu Sheng, well no matter less calorie consume.

Speaking of Yu Sheng, My family will  just Lo Hei *Toss* without knowing the significance..  I know the table will be full of the Yu Sheng leaving only like 30% to 40% of it on the plate. Most of us wont know what to say or whats the meaning behind it all, so I went to look for the meaning of Yu Sheng, Hopefully next year I would appreciate the Yu Sheng rather than just scoff down its delicious goodness, you may print it out for reference, I know I will for the next time, maybe you can impress your friends with your new found knowledge of this beautiful dish.

8 Steps to Present Lo Hei Yu Sheng 捞起鱼生
We must be particular about the way the Lo Hei Yu Sheng 捞起鱼生 were presented to us. Whenever a waiter or waitress hold out a type of ingredient, he or she would say something auspicious on Chinese New Year. There are 8 steps to bring forth the meaning of getting wealthy.

1st step: Say Gong Xi Fa Cai 恭喜发财 (getting rich) and Wan Shi Ru Yi (to be smooth sailing) when putting down the Yu Sheng 鱼生 on the table.

2nd Step: Say Da Ji Da Li 大吉大利 (to be very auspicious) when adding limejuice to the ingredient.

3rd step: Say Nian Nian You Yu 年年有余 (to have a surplus every year) and Long Ma Jing Shen (to enjoy great health) when placing Yu Sheng 鱼生 onto the shredded carrot.

4th step: Say Yi Ben Wan Li 一本万利 (business to be flourishing) when putting pepper and five-spice powder to the Yu Sheng 鱼生.

5th step: Say You Shui Duo Duo 油水多多 (business to be flourishing) when adding golden cooking oil and sauces to the Yu Sheng 鱼生 .

6th step: Say Jin Yin Man Wu 金银满屋 (to obtain abundant wealth) when sprinkling the golden peanut powder.

7th step: Say Sheng Yi Xing Long 生意兴隆 (business to be flourishing) when sprinkling the sesame powder.

8th step: Say Man Di Huang Jin 满地黄金 (to obtain abundant wealth) when adding the thin golden membrane.

May everyone here see their fortune rise higher with each toss.?You won’t be able to resist it when you are told to start mixing the Lo Hei Yu Sheng 捞起鱼生 by tossing it in the air – the higher the better!  TOSS AWAY PEOPLE !!!

    Thank-you so much. I have published twelve stories about Singapore. Four are published in the Singaporean journal I want to collect these stories in one volume and want to name it ‘Yu Sheng’. Your photo (the second) was so nice, and captured it all so well. The collection is currently under consideration by publishers, and nothing is certain yet, but if I self publish I would definitely like to use it. I would send you a copy. Thank you again! Daniel
